Porsche 996 GT3 RS For Sale

The Porsche 996 GT3 RS is the homologation special that underpinned Porsche's GT class racing programme in the early 2000s. Built to satisfy the FIA GT regulations, just 682 examples were produced — making it one of the rarest production 911s of its era and an increasingly important collector car.

The 996 GT3 RS uses the same 381hp M96.76 naturally aspirated engine as the standard GT3 — critically free of the IMS bearing issue that affects regular M96 Carrera engines. What distinguishes the RS is its wider body (borrowed from the Turbo/C4S), polycarbonate rear windows, fixed rear wing, and stripped interior with roll cage preparation. The racing pedigree is direct — GT3 RS Cup cars competed in the Porsche Supercup and national GT series worldwide.

Original RS colours — Clubsport Red and Clubsport Yellow — command the strongest values. Matching numbers, original roll cage preparation plate, and a documented competition or road history are the key provenance points. The 996 GT3 RS is now firmly in collector territory, with values having risen substantially from their depreciated lows.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many Porsche 996 GT3 RS were made?
Porsche produced 682 examples of the 996 GT3 RS between 2003 and 2005. This makes it significantly rarer than the standard 996 GT3 and one of the most limited-production 996 variants. The rarity combined with its racing homologation status drives collector interest.
Does the 996 GT3 RS have the IMS bearing problem?
No. The GT3 RS uses the M96.76 engine — the same high-revving motorsport-derived unit fitted to the standard GT3. This engine uses a different architecture to the M96 fitted in regular 996 Carreras and is entirely free of the IMS intermediate shaft bearing issue.
What makes the 996 GT3 RS different from the standard GT3?
The RS adds the wide Turbo-spec body (front and rear), polycarbonate rear and side windows, a larger fixed rear wing, and a more aggressive aero package. Inside, the car is more stripped with roll cage preparation points. The RS was specifically built for GT class racing homologation.
