1997 PORSCHE 911 (993) GT2
MAXTED PAGE
The idea behind the 993 GT2 was to create a homologation model for customer motorsports, complying to the GT2 categories of the FIA and the ACO.
£1,250,000
Details
It was aimed at private teams competing in GT series around the world. Porsche had no plans to campaign the 993 GT2 as a works entry. The GT2 category was not a contender for the overall win at the 24 hours of Le Mans and the concept already existed to build a 911 GT1 works car for the higher category.
The road legal version was positioned up market from the 993 Turbo, it featured the same everyday practicality of the 993 Turbo without the abundance of comfort features. The GT2 was focused on performance, a weight reduction of 200 kgs and looked significantly different from other production 911s. Powered by a 3.6 L twin turbo flat six engine, the GT2 ran a higher boost than the standard 993 Turbo and at 430 hp and a maximum torque of 540 Nm, it developed almost the same horsepower as the race version.
A total of 194 911 GT2s were built in three variations -
M002: Road
The road legal GT2 variant carried the order code M002. Available as left and right-hand drive, 161 cars were built over three years between 1996-1998.
M003: Clubsport
The Clubsport package, order code M003, was also type approved as road legal, albeit stripped of carpets and everything comfort orientated, with a roll cage welded into the chassis for track use, 33 cars were built in left-hand drive only.
M005: Race
The last group of cars was the Race version, order code M005, of which 77 cars were built between 1995-1998 and ordered by private teams and customers for racing in GT series around the world.

Supplied new in early 1997 by Dick Lovett Porsche to a regular customer who kept the car for approximately 4 years, before being then supplied by Porsche Bristol to Automotive Journalist and BBC Top Gear presenter, Chris Harris. The car, in hindsight that he now famously regrets selling, was then sold through Paragon Porsche to Hans Rausing of Tetrapak. It was then acquired by Paul Michaels of Hexagon, before being purchased by the current owner in 2016.
A completely unmodified example with only 26,800 miles recorded and maintenance carried out mainly by Dick Lovett Porsche. The car retains original factory wax on the underside, original thin glass all round, all factory stickers, original books, tools and keys.
993 GT2s seldom come to the market, and with only 8 UK (C16) cars ever built, right-hand drive versions such as the rarest of all.
